Steve Emberton was a professional freelance photographer during a golden era for rock and pop music in the 1970's. His images resonate with a true sense of the times. He was staff photographer at the Record Mirror for several years. His work regularly appeared in all the major music papers of the time - NME, Melody Maker, Sounds, and in newspapers and magazines throughout the world. Steve's photographs have been used for record sleeves, books and in record company promotions.

Steve's iconic 1978 photo of Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen handcuffed together is included in Rolling Stone magazine's Fifty Greatest Portraits alongside the work of Avedon, Corbijn, Ritts and Leibovitz.

Sid and Nancy

“Before the Sex Pistols embarked on their only American tour, in January 1978, Steve Emberton arrived at bassist Sid Vicious' London home with a Record Mirror reporter for a story and a shoot. "We turned up at midday," Emberton recalls, "and had to bang on the door to get him out of bed. He came out in his leather trousers with a bottle of vodka, half empty, in his hand." Vicious' girlfriend, Nancy Spungen, emerged from the bedroom and started posing, too. "They had obviously been up through the night, doing whatever they were doing," says Emberton. "The handcuffs were just part of their act."

It wasn't just an act. Both Junkies, Vicious (born John Simon Ritchie) and Spungen were the Sonny and Cher of punk debauchery. But, Emberton says, "They were very easy to work with. You take pictures of people who are supposed to be nice, and they're very uncooperative. In this case, I was told they would be terrible, but they ended up fine."

The Pistols broke up at the end of the US tour. A year later, Vicious and Spungen were both dead. He was charged with fatally stabbing her in their room at New York's Chelsea Hotel, then died of an overdose in February 1979, while out on bail. He was twenty one.”

The above first appeared in the Rolling Stone magazine.
